Look for the edges
A change in the bank, an opening beside timber or the meeting of moving and quieter water gives you something specific to work with. Approach with a clear casting lane in mind. Rather than covering every metre in the same way, give each promising piece of water a deliberate presentation.
Make the retrieve repeatable
Start with a rhythm you can reproduce: a few movements of the rod tip, then a pause. Watch how the lure behaves and adjust one thing at a time. If you change speed, pauses and direction together, it becomes harder to learn what the fish responded to.
Notice the follow-up
A missed strike still tells you something. Note where it happened and how the lure was moving. A second cast along a slightly different line can teach you more than immediately changing the entire setup. Keep a record of the conditions so the experience carries into your next trip.
