On the Water

The best thing in your tackle bag might be a notebook.

Turn a day on the water into something you can learn from, one observation at a time.

Record the ordinary details

Start with the place, time, water clarity and the tackle you used. Add what you could see: the cover along the bank, changes in current or activity near the surface. A few specific observations are easier to revisit than a long account written from memory.

Separate observation from explanation

What happened and why you think it happened are two useful but different notes. Record a follow or a strike as an observation. Keep your explanation beside it as something to explore next time. That small distinction leaves room to learn.

Give the next trip a starting point

Finish the entry with one thing you would try again and one thing you would change. Include a photograph of the setup if it helps. Over time, a modest notebook can become a personal guide to the water you know best.
